DIY Toothpaste!

Let’s make some toothpaste! Why? Because…
First day of our ‘No supermarket’ challenge and we ran out of toothpaste. Pfft! Luckily I’ve been making my own toothpaste for a little while now – experimenting – so I had an idea of what to do! There are plenty of other cool recipes, but this is a simple and basic one. The recipe goes like this:
The idea here is to put enough ‘melted’ coconut oil with the bicarb so that it’s no longer in powder form but a paste. Some folks add peppermint or cinnamon oil for taste. Even a bit of raw honey will help keep your mouth uber fresh. I’m used to the salty taste of bicarb, so I don’t mind it at all. (it might need some getting used to in the beginning) I dare you… try it! ![]() DIY Toothpaste Other uses for coconut oil are (there are many):
There are so many uses for coconut oil, but these are just some of the things we use it for. Do you have an alternative to shop-bought toothpaste? Here’s to a beautiful smile! |

I’ve been interested in making toothpaste, for eco reasons and animal testing reasons, but I have a thing about my teeth, I like them to be very, very clean and look after them very well (I had braces for 7 whole years as a teen and have a bridge with 2 false teeth on now..I have weird gappy teeth that need love!) Isn’t your homemade toothpaste really greasy from the coconut oil? Doesn’t the bicarb. scratch your teeth?
There are so many recipes out there I found… but I liked experimenting with this basic one and find out what works and what doesn’t. I think if you brush too hard it might be too rough but as with any other toothpaste, you are suppose to brush softly. The oil in the coconut oil makes it glide over your teeth which makes it a little easier and apparently you have to brush with the grain of your teeth. i.e. the grain runs downwards so you need to brush up and down… which is actually quite difficult. The bicarb also dissolves and doesn’t hurt your teeth. It is much better than the shop bought ones we get here for sure… no nasty stuff in there that will damage my health or the planets. Oh and the coconut oil is not that much to make it greasy… the consistancy is actually stiff and powdery. Feels like real toothpaste.

hmmm, interesting, thanks for that, I may yet be converted to homemade toothpaste – especially as I have all the ingredients here, it wouldn’t hurt to try it would it!
