Planting with Toilet Paper Rolls
![]() Lady Jane and Master Sunshine planting some carrots! I know… I know… it sounds crazy. But my self-sustainable book said we could do it! So we listened and tried it! No seriously, I’m really t-r-y-i-n-g to throw less things away – I just can’t bare the thought that I am responsible for polluting our beautiful earth and seas… All the plastic and waste. Just not a good idea. We are not 100% there yet [or even close], but we are learning how to do it. Hopefully soon we will be able to achieve Zero Waste? What do you think, is it possible? Apparently this family did. Read it if you can, it is amazing stuff! http://myzerowaste.com/ So in our quest, we have decided to use old toilet paper rolls to grow our carrots in. mmmm. Interesting. There are so many ways to do this, but this is what we managed to do. ![]() Lady Jane showing the tools Now, you might ask why toilet paper rolls…? Well, firstly it helps this family get rid of the darn stuff without throwing it in the bin and secondly it will force the carrots to grow down and straight and look ever so beautiful. The toilet paper roll will [hopefully] protect the little seedlings from the wind as well. ![]() Toilet paper rolls I also keep all my old tea bags, dry them and empty them to make some cool compost. So I have now found two ways to help towards my zero waste dream… woo-hoo! ![]() Used rooibos tea leaves Now, do you remember us planting kale seeds end of February in this post? Well, here is how our little lovelies are coming along… pretty neat right? This is a pic of kale and tomato growing together… can’t wait to harvest them! ![]() Kale and Tomatoes growing lovingly Oh, and we are the proud owner of a little baby mango tree! Lady Jane decided to put a mango pip in a pot with soil to see if it would grow and ta-da… it did! Amazing stuff. I hope it grows big and strong, even though we don’t really have the climate for mangoes. But it’s fun to watch though. ![]() Baby mango tree! Master Sunshine working the toilet paper rolls! Hopefully soon we will have delicious carrots to eat. Can’t wait. ![]() Master Sunshine positioning the toilet paper rolls Until next time… happy growing! |

I love that carrot/toilet roll idea, I’ve not heard that one before.
Your tomato and kale look like they’re doing well, and I’m super jealous of your mango! I have an avacado pip I’m trying to grow but I don’t think it’s warm enough here!
If you have a compost heap you can put the teabags whole onto that too – that way the bag part gets cpmposted too – drying the tea is a great idea too though, plants love tea!
Wonderful idea! I may try this this year, but for next year.
What a lovely idea – another use for the toilet roll
Thanks @Sooz – maybe i’ll have a cup of tea with my plants in future…
Welcome @Shannon… lovely of you to drop by and say hi…
Thanks @Bets… so glad you read my stuff.
