Fresh Winter Citrus Salad with Mint Recipe

winter citrus salad with honey and mint

Citrus is all cool and stuff. It really is. But half the time they sit on my kitchen counter and die. However, I was having strong feelings towards ‘I need a serious health kick’! This, obviously after eating months and months of comfort food, due to our very ‘exciting’ lockdown situation.

Citrus fruit always feels like a bit of sunshine during dreary Winter days. Don’t you agree? I feel I could do with all the sunshine I could possibly get. So, creating this recipe was perfect! It lifted my mood. Made me feel good about myself. 100% self care by creating something that nourishes and satisfies.

What citrus do you need?

Now, the variety of fruit at my disposal for this salad, included a grapefruit, a Cara Cara navel orange, naartjie and a lime. Perfect for a Winter citrus salad taste explosion!

Sunshine Magic?

The sunshine magic happens when you take these beautifully coloured fruit, peel it seductively and slice it across in thinnish slices to resemble a flower. This magic include the fresh vibrant fragrant smell of citrus. The colourful display of their juicy flesh. Mouthwatering!

When you drizzle honi (Vegan honey) over these beauties and you scatter some mint leaves over. I tell you, it is an experience to behold. If you are brave, add lime for an extra kick.

What does it taste like?

The bitter taste from the grapefruit, the tartness from the lime and the sweet explosion from the naartjies and oranges, literally makes your eyes roll back. And I am not even kidding. You have to try it to get the full experience of what I am trying to say here. It satisfies all your senses.

Is this cheap to make?

We are in citrus season at the moment, so we have an abundance of these orange and yellow beauties all over town. Eating in season makes food immensely cheap. So, yes. This was an extremely cheap meal to make. This tastes just as good without the honi and mint. But the honi and mint just gives it a full 5-star experience.

The produce bag!

Actually remembering my produce bag when I go out shopping always makes me feel like I am winning at this life thing. But to be honest, the times I DO remember are really few and far between. But I am conscious about living a low impact / zero waste life. One ‘baby’ step at a time!

I love citrus and am sad I’m only now hearing about a citrus salad. Perfect timing though with summer being upon it. I’m also intrigued because I’ve never heard of a naartjie and want to find out how it tastes. Thanks for the citrus salad recipe.

My uncle owns a farm of citrus and he loves to do grafting. On one citrus tree, one branch is of grapefruit the other blood orange and so on. A total of 5 types of citrus on one tree. Would love to try this in the coming winters right in the middle of the farm.
