Palm Heart Medallions

Palm Heart Medallions

What are palm hearts?

I know you are wondering what palm hearts are. Well, they are the bud of a growing palm tree. They are popular in Asian dishes as well as in Brazil. They are soft in texture. Soft but firm. They have a slightly salty taste. They actually have quite a lot of health benefits. It is low in Cholesterol and is a good source of Protein, Riboflavin and Potassium, and a very good source of Dietary Fiber, Vitamin C, Folate, Calcium, Iron, Magnesium, Phosphorus, Zinc, Copper and Manganese. Not too shabby!

I bought the sliced medallions. They were cheaper. I thought two tins would not amount to much. But boy, was I wrong. They make enough for three to four people. No kidding.

All you need for this recipe are:

  • Palm hearts,
  • Tempura flour for the batter and
  • All-purpose flour to dip in
  • Oil for deep frying.

This is more of a treat then a staple. As obviously, deep-frying is not the healthiest of things to do. But when the craving hits! This is just such an amazing dish to prepare!

What do vegan calamari taste like?

It ‘almost’ tastes like the octopus version. The texture is so spot on. It doesn’t have those stringy veins like normal calamari. And that is a big bonus I think. The batter is just perfect and the palm hearts works so well with this recipe. The nori (seaweed) flakes gives it a fishy taste. We dipped them in some plum sauce. A new staple in the house and I will serve this to friends and family with ease. Meat eater or not! This is a winner! Try it!

What is tempura flour? I looked it up and the results gave me tempura recipes. Some mentioned a combo of rice flour and all purpose flour. Also, in the recipe it says to bring the oil to a “rolling boil”. What temperature do you suggest? I don’t think I have ever “boiled” oil so I am not sure what this means. I have all of the ingredients (except tempura flour) and can’t wait to try this recipe! It looks delicious. Thanks so much!
